Here's something you don't see every day

Sorry for the light posting of late; I've been busier than a one-armed wallpaper hanger.

This picture taken recently by one of the Mars rovers caught my eye:


Note the streak in the top center - the picture shows a meteor streaking through the skies of Mars. The original image is available here on the NASA website.

I'm not up on my Mars trivia. Does this mean that Mars has an atmosphere in which the meteor can burn up in? Or is there some other explanation?

Yes. The atmosphere of Mars is very thin, about 0.7% as thick as the Earth's atmosphere.
